Mission Statement: “Promote excellence in trauma patient management by all providers involved in the delivery of prehospital care.”

Pre-hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) is recognised around the world as the leading continuing education program for prehospital emergency trauma care.

PHTLS courses improve the quality of trauma care and decrease mortality. The program is based on a philosophy stressing the treatment of the multi-system trauma patient as a unique entity with specific needs. PHTLS promotes critical thinking as the foundation for providing quality care. It is based on the belief that, given a good fund of knowledge and key principles, EMS practitioners are capable of making reasoned decisions regarding patient care. The course utilises the internationally recognized 9th Edition of the PHTLS textbook which has been updated and published for UK providers and covers the following topics:

  • Physiology of life and death
  • Scene assessment
  • Patient assessment
  • Airway
  • Breathing, ventilation and oxygenation
  • Circulation, haemorrhage and shock
  • Patients with disabilities
  • Patient simulations

PHTLS is the global gold standard in prehospital trauma education and is taught in 64 countries and is appropriate for paramedics, EMTs/ECAs, nurses, advanced practitioners, doctors and other prehospital providers. PHTLS is accredited by CAPCE and recognized by NREMT.

  3. John Handisides

Good foundation for Pre-Hospital Care, and suitable for all levels. Would recommend reading the manual early (as it’s deep), but you will get the best practical experience, with really good simulation. Thank you

  4. Jayne

Excellent course with good facilities. Skills stations good, and scenarios allow consolidating theory to practise. Staff knowledgable and approachable. Would recommend this course for anyone wanting to work in the prehospital environment, or for refreshing skills.

  5. Student 1

Each individual lesson was interesting and delivered very well. Lots of new interesting things were taught and I feel that I’ve learned a lot.

  6. Student 2 – Sept 16th

Head injury lecture was very useful in management techniques and learning symptom progression from the point of impact. Well run with excellent staff and good learning opportunities.

  7. Student 3 – Sept 16th

The practical scenarios were exceptional, the clinical educators ensured the scenarios were realistic which made them interesting. Providing a buffet was also very much appreciated .

  8. Student 4 – Sept 16th

Good opportunity to practice airway and clinical skills i.e surgical airway. Good amount of practical simulation balanced with the theory aspect.

  9. Student 5 – Sept 16th

Scenario practice was really useful to practice the skills learnt throughout the day in a realistic scenario. Really enjoyed the course, was good to refresh my learning on aspects and learn new skills as well as gain new knowledge. Was well taught and the instructors were clear and informative.

  10. Student 6 – Sept 16th

    Enjoyable course with good instructors.

  11. Student 7 – Sept 16th

Great that the course was not run in a didactic manner – allowed room for individual development. Approachable faculty!

The Joining Instructions time was different to course timetable, more clarity would be useful.

  12. Student 8 – Sept 16th

Primary survey lesson was good to go through the A-E assessment and show how each one is applied. The course was well explained and I have taken a lot away from it. I will now be more systematic in my approach to trauma patients.

  13. Student 9 – Sept 16th

All delivered in a systematic and relevant order. Good combination of theory, skills and scenarios. Very knowledgeable instructors.

  14. Student 10 – Sept 16th

I found that each of the lessons were well structured. I found the breathing assessment to be very beneficial in consolidating my technique and use of tools.

The scenarios were well designed and pushed my bandwidth which required me to focus on delegation and prioritisation of interventions.
